Opportunity for progress: How can employment boost the UK's social mobility?

The world of work has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years, not least since the pandemic. Business and public sector organisations are facing huge challenges recruiting the people they need, but around 1.7 million people who are currently economically inactive say they want to get back to employment. Technology is also rapidly changing the workplace, and it will be vital to harness its power for the public good.

Boosting social mobility and widening access to opportunity is a key part of the challenge. Too many people are locked out of jobs because of a lack of access to opportunity, and in a tight labour market, the economy could be offering people much better prospects. By breaking down barriers and widening access to opportunities, Britain can get more people into jobs and provide opportunities to succeed.

This event will see Labour's Shadow Minister for Employment, Alison McGovern set out key policy announcements on how a future Labour government could widen access to opportunities and boost social mobility by transforming job centres and training opportunities, and the event will align closely with the 'Highest Growth in the G7' and 'Breaking down barriers to opportunity at every stage' Missions.

The event will include short introductory remarks from Justine Greening, Chair of the Purpose Coalition and former Secretary of State for Education, followed by a speech from Shadow Minister for Employment Alison McGovern, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
